Bacalar

Bacalar is a small town in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. It is best known for its lagoon, which is said to be one of the most beautiful in the world.

Bacalar is also home to reefs of bacteria (such as microbialites), considered primitive beings, that have lived there for over 9,000 years. These bacteria play an important role in the ecology of Bacalar Lagoon, and scientists believe that they may hold clues to the origins of life on Earth.
