Salt Route – Tavira – 1 Hour Boat Trip – Cabanas: Cabanas is linked to tuna fishing since its origin. In 1734 began the tuna fishing with nets (armação), which led to the construction of the first huts to keep the fishing equipment and to be a shelter to the fishermen. For 20 years the huts were only seasonal residence. Only in 1757/58 some fishermen built permanent homes.
Now Cabanas has 1181 permanent residents, a number that increases a lot in the summer with tourists.
The community continues to dedicate itself to fishing, enriching the local cuisine with their contributions. But the tourism is getting more importance year after year.
The fishermen village with a rehabilitated waterfront with a new wooden walkway that goes through all the village, passing through numerous cafes, restaurants and craft shops.
A) Cabanas Island – SW side, deserted beach. Due to its location, opposite the city of Cabanas de Tavira, this beach is one of the most crowded in eastern Algarve. It offers easy access through ferry boats or water taxis.
B) Tavira Island – With its prestigious title as one of Europe’s finest beaches, the path leading from the Ria to the beach is lined with campsites, as well as a variety of restaurants and bars. This is the only island with a camping park.
Located on the east side of Tavira bay, Desert Beach on Cabanas Island is a tranquil getaway from the crowds. It is considered one of the best beaches to relax and offers the opportunity to explore the Natural Park of Ria Formosa on a pleasant walk.
C) Tavira – The Gilão river divides the city, with shops and restaurants surrounding it. The historic center is rich in archaeological marks from the Phoenicians and Islamics, as well as convents displaying Gothic and Manueline influences, Renaissance churches, and Baroque chapels.
