Ria Formosa Natural Park is one of Portugal’s most important protected wetlands designated as a Ramsar site and one of the 7 Wounders of Portugal. This Natural Reserve covers 14,000 hectares, protected by sand barriers and dunes along the coast. It hosts over 20,000 waterbirds, particularly during winter, making it a vital protected area.
This spot is crucial for migratory birds traveling to or from Africa, providing them with essential resources. In a single day, you can witness the presence of over 200 bird species. They inhabit various habitats including dunes, open water, mudflats, marshes, pans, reedbeds, lagoons, and pine woods.
This area is abundant in wader species and passerines, making it an excellent location to spot unique and localized birds not found elsewhere in Portugal. Examples include the Purple Swamp-hen and Little Bittern.
