Gerês National Park is the only National Park in Portugal and for sure the best place to go for a hike. It takes approximately one and a half hours by car from Porto to reach the heart of the park.
Hiking is not very popular in Portugal and due to that, is always difficult to visit the best spots in the park, this because there is a lack of marked trails taking you into the heart of the park, reason I decided to do a trail a bit tougher but as well much better.
This is a 11 km circular track with a 700 meters elevation gain, 350 uphill and 350 downhill in an uneven terrain, something much more challenging than a normal back-country hiking, so something between medium and difficult in terms of intensity.
People who have experience in this type of terrain can manage with sportive shoes. Experts recommend that individuals who are less accustomed to the terrain use boots and walking poles.
