The Lisbon Metropolitan Area is a metropolitan area that encompasses 18 municipalities in Greater Lisbon and the Setúbal Peninsula. It is the most populous metropolitan area in the country (NUTS III), with 2,821,876 inhabitants (2011), and the second most populous region (NUTS II), after the North Region.
It is an intermediate level entity of the Local Public Administration, of an associative nature. The Lisbon Metropolitan Area pursues common interests of its municipalities with an associative nature.
There are 18 municipalities that make up the LMA, grouped into two sub-regions: Greater Lisbon and Península de Setúbal.
