Watching Seahorses and Underwater Ruins: Observation of Seahorses and underwater ruins of the Fort of São Lourenço. The São Lourenço Fortress is the only known military structure in Portuguese territory that is submerged. The Fortress was built in the 17th century (although cartographic records indicate the presence of ruins of a previous fortress) in Ria Formosa, next to the old “Barra Grande”, replacing the Torre de Marim, in the defensive functions of the entrance to the city of Faro, since the reign of D. Dinis.
