Thórsmörk – Valley of Thór: The abundance of waterfalls on the Icelandic map can make you dizzy, so sticking to those most remarkable sounds like a good plan, especially during your first visit to Reykjavik. We’ll pick you up at your accommodation and together we’ll head towards the breathtakingly beautiful Seljalandsfoss, which remains among the best-known waterfalls in Iceland. This 60m high beauty has been immortalized in a myriad of pictures you might have googled before the trip and seeing it’s majesty with your own eyes is really worth all the hype. Needless to say, the possibility to walk behind the cascades of water makes it a unique and unforgettable experience. Can you imagine a better start to your day? If there’s enough sun we may even be surprised by a gorgeous rainbow in a cameo appearance 🙂
Back to our Defender we will drive along Eyjafjallajökull, another superstar among Iceland’s natural wonders. With the view of one of the most famous volcanoes and its ice cap outside the windows, crossing many challenging rivers on the way, the jeep will take us to the Thórsmörk valley. Lying just behind the volcano, this scenic area still bears traces of the notorious 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull, which received high media coverage due to disruption it caused to european air traffic.
Does the Thórsmörk name ring a bell? It sure does if you’re into mythology! The Valley of Thor derives its name from the Norse God of Thunder and stands as a true treasure for nature enthusiasts.Lush green moss, ferns and Birch forests crowned with impressive mountain ranges over the horizon… one look at the emerald hue of the thriving vegetation leaves you, well, thunderstruck! So do the stunning, new volcanic craters, Magni and Módi, named after the sons of the mighty god. Thórsmörk offers a breathtaking view over the entire valley from one of the hills, which we’re going to hike – Valahnúkur mountain. A good 1,5 hour long trekking will make both your legs and eyes very satisfied and hungry for more exciting moments.
As the day draws to a close it’s time for the last spot on our Thórsmörk tour map. The otherworldly Stakkholtsgjá canyon we’re going to explore located on the South of the Icelandic Highlands is a massive challenge – literally! Around 2 km long and surrounded with 100 meters high, moss-covered walls, the canyon offers a very rewarding hiking trail and one of the most dramatic landscapes in Icelands. Why, the reward awaits you at the very end of the trail in the form of a lovely waterfall hidden somewhere in a twisting gorge.
Any avid fan of HBO’s epic “Game of Thrones” series knows it well that the makers are especially fond of icelandic scenery. If you consider yourself one of those fans, make sure to capture as many pictures as possible at Stakkholtsgjá – the location appeared in several episodes of season 7 and 8!
Wonderfully tired and still intoxicated with the magical land of Thórsmörk we’ll head back to Reykjavik, with mesmerizing shots taken by our guide, a professional photographer, and heads full of priceless memories. We bet this trip will only whet your appetite for more icelanding adventures. You won’t find the unique attractions offered by The Land of Fire and Ice anywhere else.
