Small-Group Day Tour of Snaefellsnes Peninsula Natural Park – We often call the Snaefellsnes Peninsula the miniature version of Iceland. This region is a combination of waterfalls, rugged lava fields, black sand beaches, history, and local folklore. After a short stop in the small town of Borgarnes, we are hitting the road, slowly approaching our first attraction. If the weather conditions are ideal, you could already see the glacier on top of the stratovolcano, which you might remember from the novel “Journey to the Center of the Earth” by Jules Verne.
Our first official stop, the Berserkjahraun Lava Field has created 4 000 years ago, after the eruption of the three nearby volcanoes. Furthermore, you will hear about the dark history of this place and our guide will also show you a secret waterfall.
After that, a local celebrity is on our list. We will be exploring the famous Kirkjufell mountain (as seen on Game of Thrones) and a picturesque waterfall in the area.
Our next stop is one of the dormant volcanic craters on the peninsula, Saxhóll. It is approximately 3 000 years old and 100 meters high. Lucky for us, there is a staircase leading to the top, so the walk upstairs will be rather relaxing. Please note that Saxhóll is not available from December to February.
Djúpalónssandur, a black sand beach, was the home of a smaller fishing community in the old days will have a special test waiting for you. Back in those times, the local fishermen had to prove their strength, lifting stones with different weights. Only the strongest were able to lift the heaviest stones, earning their places on the shipping vessels.
The beautiful and charming fishing village of Arnarstapi will be our next stop. The stunning cliff formations on the beach are extremely picturesque. We will also look at the sculpture of Bárður Snæfellsás, the guardian of the peninsula.
A cultural sight is up next, the Budakirkja Black Church. After the decision of the Danish king, the original building was demolished and was not rebuilt until 1849. Thanks to a woman named Steinunn, some of the old artifacts were saved and are still on display today.
Our last stop will be at Ytri-Tunga, which is a beautiful golden-colored beach and the home to a seal colony.
