On this 2 hr. guided walking tour, you will learn all about the Imagine Peace Tower, the island’s important trading history, artwork and nature. The tower’s illumination extends from one hour after sunset until midnight during the period from 9 October to 8 December. This period coincides with John Lennon’s birthday and the anniversary of his passing. Starting from Winter Solstice, the beam of light illuminates the night sky until the morning of the New Year. Additionally, it shines on Yoko Ono’s birthday and during the week of Spring Equinox. The ever-changing weather conditions on the island impact the strength, intensity and brilliance of the tower.
Yoko Ono selected Iceland for the monument due to its status as one of the world’s most peaceful countries, lacking an army. The tower’s reliance on sustainable resources is greatly influenced by the country’s utilization of geothermal energy.
