A new way to discover Palermo with, at each stage, the starting point for a reflection on what the “mafia” phenomenon is and on the civil mobilization against the mafia power. A walk of about three hours in the heart of the story told by those who live the city on a daily basis, in its true essence, far from clichés.
From the Teatro Massimo – that place that symbolizes the rebirth of Palermo after a long dark and painful period -, to Piazza Beati Paoli – where we will tell you this legend that unites (without historical foundation) the sect of Natoli’s novel to the Sicilian mafia Cosa Nostra -, passing by the famous and picturesque Il Capo Market. From Piazza della Memoria – with its memorial dedicated to magistrates murdered by the Mafia – to the cathedral – which will allow us to address the question of the relationship between the Mafia and the Catholic Church, a relationship that contrasts the anti-Mafia commitment of certain martyrs such as Don Pino Puglisi -. Or the Town Hall, symbol of the union between the mafia and the political class for so many years, but which also experienced its resurrection with the Palermo Spring. Finally, Piazza Magione, in the Arab quarter of Kalsa, the beating heart of the city: it is here, in this place still marked by crime, that the magistrates Falcone and Borsellino grew up. It is also here, in this underprivileged district, that the Addiopizzo association, which has made it possible to denounce the “pizzo” racket, concentrates its social projects.
Throughout our journey, we will come across windows that display the logo of the critical consumer campaign “I pay who does not pay”: they belong to merchants who have chosen to say NO to racketeering, claiming their commitment not to pay for the pizza.
Our tour will end at the “Antica Focacceria San Francesco”, specializing in typical Palermo “street food”. This restaurant today represents a symbol of the rebellion of entrepreneurs against the pizzo: the owners made the courageous choice to denounce their extortionists, marking a turning point in the history of the fight against racketeering in Palermo. Since then, hundreds of traders have decided to collaborate with justice through denunciation.
The meal is not included but we encourage you to try some specialties such as milza (spleen bread), arancine (stuffed rice balls), panelle (chickpea flour fritter), anelletti al forno (a type of baked pasta), involtini di melanzane (eggplant rolls), sarde a beccafico (sweet and savory dish made with sardines), not forgetting our famous pastry, the cannolo.
