Mask Making Class – Venetian mask making, when it is done correctly, is not a trivial thing. The techniques are easy enough to explain, but the execution requires real craftsmanship and artistic vision. For this reason, our Venetian mask making course is based on a specific mask model: the bauta, which probably is the most recognizable of Venetian carnival masks. Its shape allows even beginners to attain satisfactory results.

During a fully immersive introduction, participants gain a deep understanding of Venetian mask-making techniques and appreciate the craftsmanship involved. As result, the finished product of their own efforts always gives a real feeling of accomplishment.

Begin with a brief introduction before participants dive into creating their own cartapesta masks. Utilizing a plaster (gesso) mold and our special absorbent paper, participants can craft their masks. Participants preserve the authentic Venetian mask-making experience by using only traditional materials and avoiding machines or power tools. After completing the mask, allow the cartapesta (papier-mâché) to dry for at least one day. Finally, participants can extract their bauta mask once it is dry.
