This is a day pass on our scheduled Kjölur Highland Bus service, and includes a transfer from Reykjavík to Hveravellir and returning to Reykjavík by evening. On the way you will drive through the beautiful countryside of South Iceland, and passing by some of Iceland‘s most iconic natural wonders. The central highlands cover a large uninhabited area of Iceland that is mostly inaccessible for a large portion of the year. As the snow starts melting in spring, incredible landscapes appear that can only be appreciated and explored during the summer months.
Hveravellir Nature Reserve is located in the center of Iceland, nestled in between two large glaciers; Langjökull and Hofsjökull. This is a geothermally active oasis, which have made it a mandatory stop for centuries for anyone traversing the Kjölur route that connects South Iceland and North Iceland. Historically, weary travelers who were crossing the highlands either by foot or on horseback, would stop here for some well-needed rest. Famous 18th century outlaws Fjalla-Eyvindur and Halla also lived here while hiding from authorities, since the warmth of the hot springs made it possible to survive during the freezing cold winter months. Some remnants of their dwellings are still visible in the area.
Several marked hiking routes of varying lengths and difficulties are found in Hveravellir. They lead you around the various hot springs and fumaroles, to lava fields and lush valleys, all while you enjoy the panoramic views of the mountains and glaciers all around. And of course there is a warm pool where you can soak and relax in true Icelandic fashion, where hot geothermal water mixes with the cold river to make the natural hot spring suitable for bathing.
