The village of Baiona is located on the coast, and has been a center of commerce for centuries. However, at the end of the 19th century, the nearby city of Vigo began to grow rapidly, causing many businesses to move there. Today, Baiona is a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful beaches and stunning views.
Contemplating the sunset is an inexcusable reason to visit the fortress of Monterreal and its famous tower of the Prince. The enclosure has three kilometers of walls, and is currently a Tourism Parador. Also worth a visit is the 13th century collegiate church of Santa María. The monument retains Romanesque reminiscences between a Gothic layout reminiscent of a fort. On the other hand, in its interior we find paintings by Juan de Flandes and Gregorio Fernández.
The Baiona Maritime Museum is also a recommended visit. It is located in the old hospital of sailors, a building from the 16th century. The museum has a permanent exhibition on the History of European Discoveries.
