The Walls of Stona series of defensive stone walls, originally over 7 kilometers in length, that surrounded and protected the city of Ston in Dalmatia. On the Gate of the Walls (Poljska vrata) there is a Latin inscription dating from 1506. Today, it is one of the longest and most preserved fortification systems in the world.
The walls were built in two phases. The first phase was during the 9th and 10th centuries, when the city was under the rule of the Croatian princes. The second phase was in the 13th century, when Ston came under the rule of the Republic of Venice. The walls are made of limestone and vary in height from 6 to 15 meters. There are three main gates: the Pile Gate, the Ploče Gate, and the Veliki or Poljski Gate.
The walls are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They are also one of the most popular tourist attractions in Croatia.
