This square was once Lisbon’s main marketplace. It was home to a covered market, which was built in 1885 and demolished in the 1950s. In its place, a bronze statue of King Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, was erected. The market square is now a popular tourist destination, with its many shops and restaurants.
