With a privileged view over the Atlantic Coast, the floodplains and the Serra de Sintra, the millenary Castelo dos Mouros, founded by Muslims, occupied a fundamental strategic position in the defense of the local territory and maritime access to the city of Lisbon. The artefacts found there indicate that, between and around the walls, a village lived there, in a space now called the Islamic Quarter.
