Angling in Lake Langisjór
Cast a line in one of Iceland's most remote and rewarding highland lakes, surrounded by glacial scenery and untouched wilderness.
Angling in Lake Langisjór offers a rare opportunity to fish for Arctic char in a pristine highland setting, where nine lakes across the Fögrufjöll mountain range are accessible under a single day permit purchased at Hólaskjól Highland Center.
Lake Langisjór sits at 662 meters above sea level, stretching 20 kilometers in length southwest from Vatnajökull glacier. The lake is flanked by the Fögrufjöll mountain range to the east and the Breiðbakur mountain to the west, creating a dramatic natural corridor that rewards those willing to make the journey.
The most accessible fishing spots are found near the peninsula cabin and along the southern end of the lake. Anglers prepared for a longer hike can explore the northern shore and the Breiðbak area, which consistently produces good results. Reaching the northernmost points requires at least an hour of driving on rough highland tracks and a capable 4x4 vehicle.
All lakes in the Fögrufjöll range hold char and offer an alternative for those comfortable with extended hiking. The entire area falls within Vatnajökull National Park, making it one of the most scenically significant fishing destinations in the Icelandic highlands.

Day Itinerary
Purchase your fishing license at the Hólaskjól Highland Center before heading to the lake. The license covers Langisjór and eight additional lakes in the Fögrufjöll mountains and is valid for 24 hours from your arrival at the lake.
Travel along mountain road F208 before turning onto F235, approximately 3 kilometers from Eldgjá. Road F235 typically opens in late June or early July, and a 4x4 vehicle with good ground clearance is required as river crossings are part of the route.
Begin angling at the most accessible and productive spots near the peninsula cabin and the southern shore of the lake. These areas are well-known for char and are suitable for all experience levels.
Experienced anglers and hikers can venture further along the northern shore of the lake toward Breiðbak, where fishing is generally rewarding. Reaching the northern end of the lake takes at minimum one hour of driving on rough highland tracks from the south.
At the southern end of the lake stands Sveinstindur, rising to 1092 meters and named after physician and naturalist Sveinn Pálsson. The ascent of around 400 meters in elevation gain is considered manageable for most visitors and offers exceptional views over the region.
Anglers who have rented the peninsula cabin may park and camp on the grounds. All other visitors must use the National Park campsite at the southern service center, where WC facilities and kayak launch access are also available.
