The route follows Iceland's Ring Road south and east, revealing a succession of natural features that have shaped both the land and its history. You will travel past the vast black sands left by centuries of glacial flooding, crossing rivers fed by the Vatnajökull ice cap, the largest glacier in Europe.
Just before reaching Jökulsárlón, the road passes beneath Öræfajökull, Iceland's second largest active volcano, whose presence is a constant reminder of the geological forces still at work beneath the island. The scale of the scenery grows steadily as the tour progresses eastward.

How the Day Unfolds
The tour begins in Reykjavik and heads east along the south coast. The landscape opens up quickly as the city gives way to lava fields and the first views of distant glacier caps.
The first major stop is Skógarfoss, one of Iceland's largest waterfalls, where the Skógá river drops 60 metres over a basalt cliff. A staircase alongside the falls allows you to climb for an elevated view across the coast.
Continuing east, the route crosses the Mýrdalssandur and Skeiðarársandur black sand plains. These glacial outwash flats extend to the sea and are among the largest of their kind in the world.
Shortly before reaching the lagoon, the tour passes beneath Öræfajökull, Iceland's second largest active volcano. Its glaciated summit dominates the skyline to the north.
The day's centrepiece is Jökulsárlón, where icebergs calve from the glacier face and drift across a deep blue lagoon. In summer, an amphibious boat tour is available to take you directly among the ice.
The return journey follows the same coastal route west, giving you additional time to absorb the scenery before arriving back in the capital.
