Dalastígur Trek: 4-Day Hut-to-Hut Trek in Fjallabak National Reserve

The Dalastígur Trek takes trekkers deep into the Fjallabak Nature Reserve on a route that runs alongside, yet deliberately away from, the iconic Laugavegur trail. This is a moderate, four-day, hut-to-hut experience covering approximately 74 km across some of Iceland's most dramatic highland terrain.
Unlike marked walking routes, the Dalastígur path follows terrain without poles or visible trail markings, offering a genuine sense of backcountry adventure in a legally protected wilderness. The route passes through rhyolite mountain ranges, geothermal valleys, volcanic canyon systems, and glacier-edge landscapes that few visitors ever encounter.
The tour is fully supported: luggage is transported between mountain huts each day, so trekkers carry only what is needed for the hours ahead. Starting from Landmannalaugar and concluding at Mosi hut, where transfers return to Reykjavik, the structure allows full focus on the terrain and surroundings.
Each day introduces a different character of the Icelandic highlands, from iron-red waterfalls and steaming geothermal valleys to volcanic ash fields, tuff hills, and the edge of the Torfajokull glacier system. The cumulative experience provides an unusually complete picture of this protected reserve.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
After pickup in Reykjavik, the group drives to Landmannalaugar, entering the Fjallabak Nature Reserve. The trek begins through the Laugahraun lava field before turning off the Laugavegur trail toward Landmannahellir, passing mountain lakes and reaching a high point of 823m. In clear conditions, Vatnajokull, Langjokull, and Hofsjokull glaciers may all be visible at once.
The second day heads toward Dalakofi hut, skirting the red waterfall Rauðifoss and tracing the route to its iron-rich source. The day climbs to 1000m altitude through colorful canyons and geothermally active valleys, with views toward Hrafntinnusker and Lake Alftavatn in good weather. This section sees very little foot traffic from other hikers.
The longest day of the trek follows the edge of the Markarfljotsgljufur canyon through the colorful terrain of the Torfajokull glacier volcano system. Views of rhyolite mountains and geothermal features continue throughout the day, ending with arrival at the remote Hungurfit hut.
The final day crosses a landscape visibly shaped by volcanic history, with ash fields, tuff hills, and the glacier margin of Torfajokull. The route follows the river Hvitmagana before reaching Mosi hut, where the group pauses to view the Markarfljotsgljufur canyon before the transfer back to Reykjavik, arriving at approximately 19:00.
