Eldgjá Canyon Trek: 4-Day Hut to Hut Trekking Tour
Four days of raw Icelandic wilderness, volcanic canyons, and hut-to-hut adventure through the remote highland interior.
The Eldgjá Canyon Trek is a four-day hut-to-hut journey through some of Iceland's most remote and geologically dramatic landscapes, covering volcanic fissures, glacier-fed rivers, and colorful rhyolite ridges far from the tourist trail.
Starting from Reykjavík, the route passes through Landmannalaugar and climbs to the summit of Peak Sveinstindur before descending into the valley of the Skaftá river. Each night is spent in a highland hut, with terrain shifting from lava fields to ancient eruption corridors as the days progress.
The centerpiece of the expedition is the Eldgjá fissure, a 60-kilometer volcanic canyon formed in 934 AD during one of the largest lava eruptions in recorded history. Hikers walk through this canyon and reach the waterfall Ófærufoss before arriving at Hólaskjól Highland Center on the final trekking night.
The tour concludes with a drive along Iceland's South Coast, stopping at the black sand beach near Vík and the waterfall Seljalandsfoss before returning to Reykjavík in the early evening.

Itinerary Overview
Pickup begins in Reykjavík with a drive to Landmannalaugar for an optional 4.5 km hike through the Laugahraun Lava field and Grænagil Canyon. The tour continues by 4x4 bus along the F208 mountain road to Lake Langisjór, where hikers ascend Peak Sveinstindur (1,090 m) before descending to a cabin by the river Skaftá for the first night. Total hiking time is approximately 4 to 5 hours with 500 to 600 meters of elevation gain.
The day follows the Skaftá river through the valley Hvanngil, passing the mountain Uxatindur across approximately 18 kilometers of trail. The destination is the historic Skælingar cabin, once used by local farmers during autumn sheep round-ups. The surrounding landscape features unusual lava formations from the Skaftáreldar eruption, and the most adventurous hikers can swim in a cold highland mere.
The trek begins with a climb to the summit of Gjátindur, which offers an expansive view over the full length of the Eldgjá fissure. The trail descends into the lava canyon and passes the waterfall Ófærufoss before reaching the Hólaskjól Highland Center for a barbecue dinner and overnight stay. Total distance is approximately 18 kilometers with an estimated 8 hours of hiking.
After breakfast, a hidden waterfall near Hólaskjól is visited before departing by road to Iceland's Ring Road along the South Coast. Stops include the village of Vík for lunch, the black sand beach, and the waterfall Seljalandsfoss. Estimated arrival back in Reykjavík is around 17:00.
