Amazon Survival Tour 5 Days 4 Nights — Juma Region, Manaus
Camp, fish, and learn to live as the forest demands — deep in the Brazilian Amazon.
This Amazon survival tour places participants in direct contact with the rainforest, spending every night under a hammock in the jungle rather than inside a lodge. Led by Joshua's Amazon Expeditions, the experience unfolds in the Juma area, roughly 100 kilometres south of Manaus, one of the most biodiverse corridors in the entire basin.
The itinerary is built around practical forest skills rather than passive observation. Guests learn to identify medicinal plants, read the forest, fish for piranha and other species, and observe how local families sustain themselves in a landscape most visitors only see from a riverboat window.
Travel through the region involves a combination of speed-boats, motorised canoes, and overland transfers, passing through the famous Meeting of the Waters where the dark Rio Negro merges with the sandy-coloured Solimoes. The route then continues into flooded forest channels and remote campsites that shift across the five days, keeping the terrain and wildlife encounters genuinely varied.
Tour Highlights
Multi-night jungle camping with hammocks and mosquito nets, fully immersed in the Amazon rainforest environment.
Canoe the flooded forest at dawn to watch the jungle wake up along hidden waterways and shallow creek systems.
Caiman spotting after dark by boat — a close encounter with one of the Amazon's most iconic reptiles.
Visit a riverside local family to observe and understand the daily rhythms of life deep inside the forest.
Piranha fishing by hand line in natural Amazon waters, with your catch prepared as part of the evening meal.
Night fishing alongside local guides who demonstrate traditional spear-fishing techniques used across the region for generations.
Spot river dolphins, monkeys, and Amazonian birdlife during boat navigation through open lakes and narrow creek channels.
Itinerary Overview
Depart Manaus by speed-boat from Ceasa Port, passing the Meeting of the Waters before crossing to Careiro da Varzea. After a short overland leg, a second boat ride reaches the base lodge for lunch. The afternoon move to the jungle campsite begins, where hammocks are rigged for the first night in the forest.
A predawn canoe trip along the channels captures the forest at first light. A guided hike from mid-morning covers medicinal plants, spider species, native trees, and occasional monkey sightings. The afternoon shifts to paddling through the flooded forest, and the night concludes with a boat excursion to spot caimans by torchlight.
The morning is spent visiting a family living in the forest, offering a candid look at subsistence routines and traditional knowledge. In the afternoon the group moves by boat to fish for piranha and other Amazonian species, returning to camp to clean and cook the catch for dinner.
An early jungle hike explores a fresh section of forest before breakfast, followed by a boat journey through narrow creeks and channels where bird and wildlife sightings are common. The group relocates to a second campsite for the night. After dark, guides demonstrate traditional spear-fishing methods along the waterways.
Breakfast at camp is followed by a final boat journey back toward the lodge, navigating open lakes where river dolphins and birds are frequently spotted. Lunch is taken at the lodge before the group departs by speed-boat, arriving back in Manaus in the mid-afternoon.
