Amazon Survival Tour: 6 Days and 5 Nights in the Deep Jungle
Camp, trek, fish, and learn to survive in one of the most biodiverse places on Earth.
This Amazon survival tour from Manaus takes you far beyond the reach of conventional jungle trips, placing you directly in the heart of the Juma area, roughly 100 kilometres south of the city, where native guides lead you through techniques, trails, and waterways that few travellers ever encounter.
The tour moves through a sequence of wild campsites deep inside the flooded forest, with nights spent in hammocks under mosquito nets. Each day brings a different combination of jungle trekking, canoe expeditions through narrow channels, piranha fishing, night safaris by spotlight, and caiman spotting along the riverbanks.
Spear fishing after dark, building forest camps, and learning to read the landscape alongside experienced local guides are among the defining experiences of this itinerary. Visits to the homes of riverside communities add a human dimension to the natural immersion.
The difficulty level is moderate, meaning participants should be comfortable with long walks on uneven terrain, heat, humidity, and sleeping outdoors without conventional amenities. The rewards are proportional to the conditions.
Tour Highlights
Navigate the Meeting of the Waters, where the dark Rio Negro and the pale Solimoes River run side by side without mixing.
Night safari by motorised boat with a spotlight to locate caimans and observe the nocturnal wildlife of the Amazon basin.
Multi-day jungle trekking on freshly cut trails, with native guides explaining medicinal plants, tree species, and forest ecology.
Spear fishing at night to source food directly from the river, one of the core survival skills practised throughout the tour.
Bird watching sessions along the small channels of the flooded forest, with opportunities to identify species endemic to the Amazon.
Canoeing through the flooded forest and narrow igarapes, reaching areas inaccessible by motorised boat.
Visits to local riverside communities and the chance to stay overnight at the home of Amazonian families during the camping rotation.
Itinerary Overview
Pick-up from your hotel in Manaus is followed by a transfer to Ceasa port. A speedboat carries the group along the Rio Negro to the floating village of Catalao, with a stop at a fish farm housing Giant Arapaima Gigas, the largest scaled fish in the world. The journey continues past the Meeting of the Waters and through Careiro Village before arriving at the first jungle camp by late morning. After lunch, the group departs by motorised boat to reach the initial overnight spot in the forest. The evening closes with a caiman spotting excursion by boat.
A canoe departs at dawn to watch the forest come alive at sunrise. Breakfast follows, then a jungle hike from 08:00 to 11:30 covering medicinal plants, local tree species, spider habitats, and possible monkey sightings. The afternoon session focuses on canoeing through the flooded forest and small channels, combined with piranha fishing using traditional methods. A night excursion by spotlight closes the day.
An early morning hike departs before breakfast to observe wildlife at its most active. After the meal, the group moves to a new campsite, continuing the pattern of rotating through different areas of the jungle. The afternoon is dedicated to navigating the smaller channels by boat for bird watching and fishing to supplement the evening meal.
These two days are spent entirely within the forest, practising survival skills alongside native guides. Activities include spear fishing after dark, trekking through sections of jungle not covered on previous days, canoeing, and visiting local families. Building forest camps and acquiring practical wilderness knowledge are the central focus of both days.
The group returns to the main lodge by mid-morning. Lunch is served before the journey back to Manaus begins at approximately 13:30, with arrival in the city expected around 16:30.
