Wetsuit Snorkeling in Silfra with Underwater Photos, From Reykjavik
Drift through crystal-clear glacial water between two tectonic plates at one of the world's most celebrated dive sites
Snorkeling in Silfra places you inside a glacial fissure where visibility stretches beyond 100 meters and the water is among the clearest on the planet. Adventure Vikings is the only operator in Iceland offering wetsuit snorkeling at this site, giving participants the freedom to dive below the surface rather than simply float on top. No diving licence or prior experience is required to join.
Silfra is a submerged canyon located within the Thingvellir UNESCO World Heritage Site, roughly 50 kilometers from Reykjavik. The fissure marks the boundary where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates drift apart at approximately 2 centimeters per year, making it one of the few places on Earth where you can physically move between two continents underwater.
The wetsuit covers your entire body and allows for a far more immersive experience than a standard drysuit, as you can submerge fully and explore the underwater landscape. The water temperature in Silfra remains consistently cold year-round, and participants should be prepared for that sensation. The reward is a surreal, weightless glide through vivid blue and green glacial water that few places in the world can match.
Underwater photos are included with this tour, so you leave with a lasting record of the experience without needing to manage your own camera equipment. The guided format ensures safety throughout while keeping the pace relaxed and accessible for first-time snorkelers.

What to Expect
The tour departs from a central meeting point in Reykjavik and travels approximately 50 kilometers northeast to Thingvellir National Park. The drive takes roughly 45 minutes through the Icelandic countryside.
On arrival at Silfra, your guide will fit you with a full wetsuit and all necessary snorkeling equipment. A thorough safety and technique briefing follows before you enter the water.
You descend into the glacial fissure and begin drifting through its distinct chambers, including Silfra Hall, Silfra Cathedral, and the Silfra Lagoon. Your guide leads the group and points out key features along the route.
Throughout the snorkel, underwater photos are taken to document the experience. These images capture the vivid colors and remarkable clarity of the Silfra water.
After completing the snorkel route, you exit the water and remove your gear with assistance from the guide. There is time to warm up and discuss the experience before departing.
