Silfra Snorkeling with Underwater Photos
Drift through crystal-clear glacial water between two tectonic plates in the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Silfra snorkeling places you inside a glacial fissure at Thingvellir National Park, where visibility stretches so far through the water that participants frequently describe the sensation as flying rather than swimming.
Located roughly 50 km from Reykjavik, Silfra ranks among the most celebrated freshwater dive sites on the planet. The fissure reaches depths of 60 to 63 meters, yet the extraordinary clarity of the glacial meltwater means light penetrates every corner, revealing vivid algae formations and sculpted rock walls on all sides.
This private tour is guided by Adventure Vikings, the only operator in Iceland to offer wetsuit snorkeling in Silfra. Unlike the standard drysuit option — which keeps participants floating passively on the surface — the wetsuit allows snorkelers to duck beneath the surface and explore the fissure with genuine freedom of movement.
No prior diving experience or certification is required. The wetsuit provides sufficient warmth for the water temperature, and the guide handles all equipment fitting, safety briefings, and underwater photography throughout the session.

Visibility in Silfra regularly exceeds 100 meters, making it one of the clearest bodies of water on Earth.
What to Expect
Arrive directly at the Silfra parking area within Thingvellir National Park. The guide will be waiting at the meeting point to welcome the group and check equipment requirements.
The guide assists each participant with fitting the wetsuit or drysuit, hood, gloves, mask, and fins. A thorough safety and technique briefing follows before entering the water.
Participants enter the water at the top of the Silfra fissure and drift slowly through three distinct sections: Silfra Big Crack, Silfra Hall, and Silfra Cathedral.
The guide captures underwater photos throughout the snorkel, documenting the fissure walls, tectonic gap, and the unique algae formations known as troll hair.
Participants exit at Silfra Lagoon, remove equipment at the changing area, and the guide shares observations about the geology and ecology encountered during the dive.
