Reykjadalur Valley Hot River Hike
A private trek through Iceland's geothermal steam valley to a natural hot river
This private guided hike into Reykjadalur Valley takes you through Iceland's iconic Steam Valley to reach a naturally heated river where you can soak in geothermal waters amid wild highland scenery. Located just 40 minutes from Reykjavik, it offers an accessible and rewarding wilderness experience without the crowds of a group tour.
Reykjadalur, meaning Steam Valley in Icelandic, earns its name from the visible geothermal activity that shapes the landscape at every turn. Fumaroles, bubbling mud pools, and sulfurous vents mark the trail as you ascend toward the river, giving the hike a sense of geological drama that few places in the world can match.
The route is rated easy to moderate and typically takes between 40 and 50 minutes one way at a comfortable pace, making it well suited for visitors without technical hiking experience. The trail is well-marked and traverses open moorland and stream crossings before reaching the bathing area.
Because this is a private experience, the pace and duration are shaped entirely around your group. Your guide can share context about Iceland's volcanic geology, local ecology, and the cultural significance of geothermal bathing in Icelandic daily life throughout the journey.

Itinerary
Your private guide meets you in Reykjavik and transfers you toward the Hveragerdi area, approximately a 40-minute drive through the southern Icelandic landscape. The journey provides views of lava fields and distant mountain ridges as context for the geology ahead.
Upon reaching the Reykjadalur trailhead, your guide will outline the route, expected conditions, and safety considerations. You will gear up and begin the ascent into the valley.
The trail winds upward through open moorland marked by geothermal vents, hot springs, and steaming ground. Your guide explains the volcanic processes shaping the terrain as you progress toward the river.
You reach the geothermal river, where naturally heated water flows through a shallow valley channel. Bathing is optional and can be enjoyed at your own pace in this entirely natural setting.
After time at the river, the group descends along the same trail back to the trailhead. You are then transferred back to Reykjavik, completing the approximately 5-hour experience.
