Itinerary
The tour opens at Iceland's premier national park, where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates have been slowly pulling apart for millennia, forming dramatic rift valleys and crystal-clear fissure pools. The site carries equal historical weight as the location of the Althing, the world's oldest parliament, established in 930. Lake Þingvallavatn, the largest natural lake in Iceland, borders the southern edge of the park and supports a uniquely diverse ecosystem shaped by the volcanic substrate beneath it.
The route continues to the Haukadalur geothermal valley, home to the geyser that gave all geysers their name. While the original Geysir erupts rarely, its neighbor Strokkur performs reliably every five to ten minutes, pushing a column of boiling water as high as 30 meters before collapsing back into a steaming pool. Surrounding pools of bubbling mud and hissing steam vents complete a landscape that illustrates Iceland's volcanic energy at its most immediate.
Gullfoss, meaning Golden Waterfall, earns its name from the golden light that filters through mist and rainbows on clear days above the canyon. The Hvítá River, fed by the Langjökull glacier, plunges 32 meters in two distinct stages before disappearing into a narrow gorge. When conditions allow, a path descends close enough to the falls that the noise and spray become physically immersive.
Kerið is a 3,000-year-old volcanic crater whose bowl holds a lake of striking turquoise water, surrounded by walls of deep red and orange volcanic scoria. A path circles the rim, offering views down into the caldera, and a second path descends to the water's edge. The contrast between the vivid mineral colors of the rock and the pale lake surface makes this one of Iceland's more visually arresting geological features.
On the return leg, the tour detours into Hvalfjörður, one of the longest fjords in southern Iceland and a place that sees far fewer visitors than the main Golden Circle sites. The fjord is named for the whales historically observed from its shores, and a major cetacean research station operated here in the late twentieth century. The surrounding landscape includes notable waterfalls, ancient lava fields, and open moorland.
The day concludes at Gamla Laugin, known as the Secret Lagoon, a natural geothermal pool near the village of Flúðir that has been used for bathing since 1891. The water temperature holds between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius year-round, and small geyser eruptions are visible from within the pool. In winter, the open-air setting also provides an opportunity to observe the Northern Lights.
