Silfra Snorkeling with Underwater Photos and Horseback Riding in Iceland
Drift between tectonic plates and ride the Icelandic countryside in one unforgettable day.
Silfra snorkeling and Icelandic horseback riding combine two of Iceland's most iconic outdoor experiences into a single full-day adventure that showcases the raw, elemental beauty of this volcanic island.
The day begins at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Thingvellir National Park, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates slowly pull apart at roughly two centimeters per year. Silfra fissure, formed by this geological drift, is consistently ranked among the clearest and most spectacular freshwater dive sites on the planet.
After drying off from the fissure, the tour continues to the Icelandic countryside for a guided horseback ride lasting approximately two hours, or 1.5 hours during winter months. The route passes through a scenic valley, crosses rivers, and reaches viewpoints including Tröllafoss waterfall.
Both activities are accessible to beginners, making this an ideal choice for travelers who want genuine outdoor immersion without requiring prior experience in either snorkeling or horse riding.
Tour Highlights
Snorkel the Silfra fissure, one of the world's top-rated freshwater dive sites, set within a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Underwater photos are included, capturing your experience between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.
Choose between a wetsuit for diving beneath the surface or a drysuit that keeps you completely dry and afloat throughout the snorkel.
Ride a genuine Icelandic horse through a scenic countryside valley, crossing rivers and reaching dramatic natural viewpoints.
Visit Tröllafoss waterfall, a secluded natural landmark steeped in Icelandic folklore, accessible only on horseback.
Experience geology in motion at Thingvellir, where the earth visibly drifts apart along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
Itinerary
The tour departs from Reykjavik with transfer to Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located approximately 45 minutes from the capital. Guides provide a briefing on Silfra's geological history during the drive.
Upon arrival, guests select either a wetsuit or drysuit based on their preference. A thorough safety briefing and equipment fitting take place before entering the water.
Guests snorkel through the crystal-clear glacial waters of Silfra, drifting between the tectonic plates with visibility exceeding 100 meters. Underwater photos are taken throughout this segment of the tour.
After the snorkeling session, the group returns to Reykjavik where pickup for the horseback riding portion is arranged from downtown at the designated time. The horse farm is operated by Laxnes horses rental.
Guests are paired with an Icelandic horse suited to their experience level. The ride lasts approximately two hours (1.5 hours in winter) and passes through a valley, across rivers, and up to Tröllafoss waterfall.
After the horseback riding concludes at the farm, guests make their way back to central Reykjavik, bringing the full-day adventure to a close.
