Vatnajokull Glacier Hike and Ice Cave Adventure
Step into a world of crystal blue ice on Breidamerkurjokull Glacier in Iceland's Vatnajokull National Park
This glacier hike and ice cave adventure takes you deep into the heart of Vatnajokull National Park, where ancient ice formations and natural cave chambers offer a rare, immersive encounter with one of Iceland's most dramatic landscapes. Guided by experts with intimate knowledge of the terrain, this is one of the most visually rewarding experiences available on Iceland's south coast.
The tour begins at the Glacier Lagoon parking lot, where you board a 4x4 vehicle for a scenic drive across a glacial plain toward Breidamerkurjokull Glacier. The route includes an F-Road passage that adds a sense of true wilderness before you arrive at the glacier's edge.
Once geared up with crampons and safety equipment, you enter the Crystal Ice Cave, also known as the Sapphire Ice Cave. This natural cavern shifts in shape and size each season as it melts and reforms, ensuring that no two visits are ever identical.
After exploring the cave's chambers, the tour continues onto the glacier itself, where you hike toward striking formations including moulins and the celebrated crystal crevasses. The deeper you descend into these ice canyons, the more intensely blue the walls become, creating a visual environment unlike anything found above ground.

Tour Itinerary
Arrive at the Glacier Lagoon parking lot in Vatnajokull National Park at least 15 minutes before the scheduled tour. Your guide will be located in the bus parking lot across from the restrooms, identifiable by the Ice Pic Journeys logo on the 4x4 vehicle.
Board the 4x4 vehicle and travel approximately 20 to 30 minutes toward the glacier, including a section of unpaved F-Road. Your guide will provide historical and geographical context about the surrounding landscape during the drive.
At the glacier parking lot, collect your equipment including crampons, ice axe, harness, and helmet. A 30-minute hike on relatively flat, rocky ground brings you to the entrance of the Crystal Ice Cave.
Spend approximately one hour inside the cave, moving through multiple chambers as your guide photographs you in the most striking locations. Your guide will also explain the cave's geological formation and the natural processes behind its annual transformation.
Exit the cave and hike onto Breidamerkurjokull Glacier, making your way toward the crystal crevasses. Descend into the ice canyon and explore the vivid blue ice formations, with your guide continuing to document the experience photographically.
Hike back to the glacier parking lot and board the 4x4 for the return drive to the Glacier Lagoon. The tour concludes at the same meeting point, approximately 5 hours and 30 minutes after the start.
