Itinerary
Arrive at least 15 minutes before your tour at the Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon parking lot within Vatnajokull National Park. Your guide will be stationed near the Ice Pic Journeys 4x4 vehicle. Note that Skaftafell is approximately a 4.5-hour drive from Reykjavik, so an overnight stay nearby is strongly recommended.
Board the specially equipped 4x4 vehicle for a 20 to 30-minute drive toward the glacier, including a stretch on an F-road across glacial plains. Your guide will share geological and historical context about the area during the drive.
After reaching the glacier parking area, collect your gear including crampons, ice axes, harnesses, and helmets. A 30-minute hike across relatively flat, rocky terrain leads to the glacier's edge, where a safety briefing and crampon demonstration are carried out.
With crampons fastened, you step onto Falljokull's icy surface and hike toward the climbing walls. Guides identify features such as moulins and crevasses along the route, providing context about how the glacier has formed over centuries.
Begin with an introduction to front-pointing technique on shorter, more accessible walls before advancing to more demanding climbs. Guides set up lines, assist throughout each attempt, and tailor wall selection to each climber's pace and ability.
Drive back to the meeting point in the 4x4 vehicle after completing the climbing session. Professionally edited photographs of your experience will be delivered via Google Drive approximately 14 days after the tour.
