Glacier Adventure — Vatnajokull National Park, Iceland

Glacier Photoshoot Adventure in Skaftafell

Step onto one of Europe's largest glaciers and bring home professionally edited images of your journey across ancient ice.

This glacier photoshoot adventure in Skaftafell takes you deep into the ice of Breidamerkurjokull Glacier, a sweeping tongue of Vatnajokull that stretches across one of Iceland's most remote and dramatic landscapes. Over five hours, guests hike across cramponed terrain, descend into crystal-blue crevasses, and return with a curated photo package to document every step.

The journey begins at the Skaftafell Airport Terminal, where a guide collects the group and loads everyone into a 4x4 vehicle for the drive toward the glacier. The route crosses an ancient glacial plain and turns onto an F-Road, a stretch that requires high-clearance vehicles and signals just how far from the ordinary world this destination sits.

On the ice itself, the landscape shifts completely. Moulins — deep cylindrical channels carved by meltwater — punctuate the surface, and the further the group ventures into the crevasse formations, the more the surrounding ice transforms into an immersive canyon of deep blue. Guides keep the pace steady and adjust to the group, ensuring everyone has time to take in the scale of the environment.

At the conclusion of the tour, the photography component comes together. The guide edits the images captured during the hike, and guests receive a complete photo package within 14 days — a tangible record of a genuinely rare experience inside one of Iceland's premier national parks.

Tour Itinerary

1
Meet Your Guide at Skaftafell Airport Terminal

Guests gather in front of the terminal, across from the restrooms in the bus parking lot, where the Ice Pic Journeys 4x4 vehicle is parked. Arriving 15 minutes early is recommended to use facilities before the drive, as there are no restrooms at the glacier itself.

2
4x4 Drive to Vatnajokull Glacier

The group boards the 4x4 and departs from the Glacier Lagoon parking lot, heading toward Breidamerkurjokull. After approximately 10 minutes, the vehicle turns onto an F-Road for a 20 to 30 minute drive across the glacial plain, with the guide narrating the geological and historical context of the surrounding landscape.

3
Gear Up and Hike to the Glacier Edge

At the glacier parking lot, the guide distributes and fits all equipment, including crampons, ice axe, harness, helmet with headlamp, and rental boots if selected. A 30-minute hike across relatively flat, rocky ground leads the group to the edge of the ice.

4
Glacier Hike Across Breidamerkurjokull

Once on the ice, guests follow the guide up the glacier toward the crevasse formations, acclimatising to crampon movement as they go. Along the route, the guide identifies moulins and other surface features unique to active glacier environments.

5
Explore the Crystal Crevasses

The group descends into a deep ice canyon where the walls shift to vivid blue the further inside the formation they venture. Approximately one hour is spent exploring and photographing the crevasse system before ascending back to the glacier surface.

6
Return to Skaftafell Airport Terminal

After hiking back to the glacier parking lot, the group boards the 4x4 for the return drive, arriving at the Skaftafell Airport Terminal to conclude the tour. Edited photos are delivered digitally within 14 days.
