Glacier Hike on Solheimajokull with Ice Climbing Introduction
Walk on ancient ice with a local guide and discover the raw beauty of one of Iceland's most accessible glaciers.
A glacier hike in Iceland on Solheimajokull offers a rare opportunity to walk on ice that has shaped the landscape for thousands of years. This guided tour is designed for beginners, requiring no prior experience or exceptional fitness level. You will spend roughly two hours on the glacier itself, exploring its surface features with expert guidance throughout.
Solheimajokull is an outlet glacier of the larger Myrdalsjokull ice cap in southern Iceland. The route to the glacier from the parking lot is a straightforward 15 to 20 minute walk along a well-maintained gravel path, ending with a panoramic view of the entire glacier. From that vantage point, the scale of the ice becomes immediately apparent.
Once at the glacier base, your guide will fit your crampons and walk you through the safety procedures before stepping onto the ice. The two hours spent on the glacier allow time to observe natural formations such as crevasses and moulins, which are vertical channels carved by meltwater. The pace is relaxed enough to appreciate the surroundings and take photographs.
This tour is led by local guides who are familiar with the glacier's constantly changing conditions. All technical equipment is provided, including a harness, helmet, crampons, and ice axe. No prior climbing experience is necessary to join this introductory experience.
