Glacier Hike and Ice Climbing at Sólheimajökull
Step onto living ice and learn to climb a glacier wall with a local expert guide.
This glacier ice climbing tour at Sólheimajökull offers a rare hands-on introduction to one of Iceland's most dramatic landscapes. No prior climbing experience is needed, and all essential gear is provided at the meeting point.
After a short hike from the parking lot, you reach the glacier edge where your guide fits your crampons and walks you through safety basics before you set foot on the ice. The approach itself is a scenic gravel path that opens onto a sweeping view of the entire glacier.
On the glacier, the group visits up to three different climbing locations, beginning with an accessible ice wall designed to build confidence and basic technique. Each successive climb can be adjusted in length and difficulty based on how the group progresses.
Beyond the climbing, guides point out the geological features that make outlet glaciers like Sólheimajökull so compelling, including deep crevasses and moulins carved by meltwater over centuries. It is an experience that combines physical activity with a close look at Iceland's rapidly changing landscape.

How the Tour Unfolds
Arrive at the designated parking lot before the tour begins. Your guide will be there to welcome the group and distribute all necessary glacier equipment, including harness, helmet, crampons, and ice axe.
Follow a well-maintained gravel path for approximately 15 to 20 minutes toward the glacier. The trail is easy underfoot and ends with a broad, elevated view over the entire glacier surface.
At the glacier base, the guide fits your crampons and demonstrates how to walk on ice. A safety overview covers how to use your axe, how to move on steep terrain, and what to watch for underfoot.
The first climb takes place on a gentler ice wall chosen to teach fundamental technique. The guide demonstrates axe placement and footwork before participants take their turn on the ice.
The group moves to two additional sites on the glacier, each offering a slightly longer or more challenging route. Guides adjust the experience based on comfort and group pace.
After the final climb, the group hikes back along the same approach trail and returns equipment at the parking lot. The tour concludes there, giving participants easy access to onward travel.
