Hvannadalshnúkur: The Great White One
Ascend Iceland's highest peak across Europe's largest glacier
Standing at 2,110 meters, Hvannadalshnúkur summit hike is the ultimate test of endurance and mountain ambition in Iceland. This guided expedition crosses the vast Öræfajökull glacier and delivers one of the most spectacular high-altitude panoramas in the North Atlantic.
The route is not a technical climb, but it demands solid stamina and a readiness for variable arctic conditions. A pre-hike briefing the evening before ensures every participant understands the glacier gear, the schedule, and what to expect on summit day.
Guides tailor the start time to each group's experience level, aiming to position everyone on the summit around 1:00 pm when conditions are typically most stable and visibility is at its peak.
The descent follows the same path, moving at a measured pace due to fatigue and roped sections, before the terrain opens up below Skerið and the return to the trailhead becomes more straightforward.

Itinerary
The evening before the summit day, guides meet participants to explain glacier equipment, review individual mountain experience, and confirm the personalized start time for the following morning.
The hike begins at Sandfell, a steep gravel hill rising from 20 meters to 700 meters. A fresh water spring at approximately 500 meters offers an opportunity to refill bottles and take a short snack break.
The route continues over gravel, rock, and snow to the landmark called Skerið (the reef) at 1,100 meters. Here, harnesses are fitted and the group ropes together for the glacier sections above.
A long snow slope leads from 1,100 meters up to the expansive plateau of Öræfajökull glacier at 1,800 meters. Guides navigate crevasse zones throughout this section, with periodic stops for water and photography.
The plateau serves as a natural lunch stop with open views across the ice cap. After eating, the group crosses the plateau and ascends the final 200 meters to the summit, putting on crampons just below the peak for the last push.
Time is taken at the top to absorb the panorama before the guided descent begins along the same route. Movement is slower on the way down due to fatigue and rope protocols, with pace increasing significantly once the group passes Skerið.
