Skessuhorn Ridge Climb from Reykjavik
An alpine ridge experience on one of Iceland's most rewarding mountains, just an hour from the capital.
The Skessuhorn ridge climb is a full-day adventure that combines a multi-hour approach through wild Icelandic terrain with a guided top-rope ascent of the mountain's striking northwest ridge. This is a genuine mountain day, not a casual hike.
From Reykjavik, the journey heads north-west into the valley of Skorradalur, where the landscape opens into swamps, river crossings, and boulder fields. The approach to the base of the mountain takes three to four hours and sets the tone for what lies ahead.
At the base, the guide equips the group, covers the fundamentals of climbing technique, and explains how the gear works before anyone leaves the ground. On the technical sections, the guide ascends 15 to 30 metres and brings each participant up on top rope, ensuring a safe and controlled experience throughout the ridge.
The summit offers panoramic views over the surrounding valleys. The descent follows either the standard hiking trail or a rappel back down the ridge, depending on conditions and the guide's assessment on the day.
