Traveling the full ring road means witnessing Iceland's most iconic landscapes in sequence, from the lava fields and turf churches of the north to the towering glaciers and black-sand beaches of the south coast. Each overnight stop is chosen to give travelers time to explore the surrounding area independently as well as on guided excursions. The itinerary balances structured sightseeing with personal freedom throughout the day.
From September through April, the route passes through prime Northern Lights territory on multiple nights, including Myvatn, the south coast near Vik, and the Reykjavik area. In summer months, the boat tour among floating icebergs at Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon is included in the program. The Icelandic Lava Show, the Myvatn Nature Baths, and a visit to Fridheimar's geothermal greenhouse are highlights that set this itinerary apart from standard ring road drives.
The tour concludes with the Golden Circle route, covering Geysir, Gullfoss, and Thingvellir National Park, before a city orientation tour of Reykjavik on the return leg. All transfers between Keflavik airport and Reykjavik are handled by the Flybus shuttle on arrival and departure days. Itinerary Overview
Arrive at Keflavik Airport and transfer to Reykjavik by Flybus shuttle. The rest of the day is free to explore the Icelandic capital at your own pace.
Depart west through Borgarnes and hike the Grabrók volcano crater. Continue north past the historic turf church at Glaumbær, through fjord scenery and mountain passes to Akureyri, the capital of North Iceland.
Explore Akureyri in the morning with optional whale watching, then travel to Godafoss waterfall and the geological wonderland of Lake Myvatn. End the afternoon at the geothermal Myvatn Nature Baths.
Walk the lava labyrinth at Dimmuborgir and visit the bubbling mud pools at Namaskarð geothermal field. Travel through the highlands to East Iceland, with a summer detour to the powerful Dettifoss waterfall.
Drive through the dramatic East Fjords and their small fishing villages before reaching Vatnajokull, Europe's largest glacier. The day ends at Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon, with a boat tour among icebergs available from May through October.
Travel the south coast past lava fields, sandy desert, and towering cliffs to Reynisfjara black beach near Vik. Visit Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls and experience the Icelandic Lava Show.
