The town of Egil's Saga
Borgarnes is closely connected to Egil's Saga, a medieval Icelandic saga, and many streets in the historic part of town bear the names of characters from the saga. A public park has a sculpture of Egill carrying the body of his son.
West of town, the church site of Borg was originally the home of Skalla-Grimur, father of Egill. Its name means "rock in the marshes", and today you can see a small church, the large rock that gave the place its name and a sculpture by Ásmundur Sveinsson.
The Settlement Center
Housed in two of the town's oldest buildings, the Settlement Center is devoted to recreating Iceland's earliest days, and its exhibitions recreate the drama of the Sagas and the birth of the island nation. It opened on 13 May 2006.
Day tours from Reykjavik also stop in the town, such as the Private Snaefellsnes Peninsula Full-Day Tour from Reykjavik and the Private Silver Circle Geopark Tour from Reykjavik.
Walks and the pool
Brákarey island is connected to the mainland by a bridge. An easy coastal walking path, 9.89 km (6 miles) long, follows the shoreline from Brákarsund to Englendingavík, where English merchants established trading activities centuries ago; it takes about 2 hours and is open all year round.
The town's geothermal swimming pool offers indoor and outdoor pools, water slides, hot tubs and a steam bath, and is open year-round.
