Private Sólheimajökull Glacier Hike
Walk on ancient ice, explore a living glacier, and uncover the raw geology beneath Iceland's frozen surface.
A Sólheimajökull glacier hike offers an intimate encounter with one of Europe's most dramatic ice formations, guided by an expert who will walk you through the science, history, and raw beauty of this ever-changing landscape.
Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier of Mýrdalsjökull, among the largest ice caps in Europe, and it rests directly above the powerful Katla volcano. This private tour gives you undivided attention from your guide and the freedom to move at your own pace across terrain that few people ever experience firsthand.
The walk to the glacier itself takes roughly 30 minutes from the parking lot — a result of the ice receding over decades due to warming conditions and the glacier's natural movement. That approach sets the scene and makes the arrival on ice all the more striking.
Once on the glacier, you will encounter millennia-old blue ice formed when oxygen is compressed out of ancient snowfall by the immense weight above. You may also look into a glacier moulin, a vertical shaft that descends through the ice to the bedrock below, where volcanic activity continues to shape the landscape.
Tour Highlights
Walk across the surface of Sólheimajökull, an active outlet glacier sitting above the Katla volcano system.
Observe ancient blue ice created over thousands of years as oxygen was compressed deep within the glacier.
Peer into a glacier moulin, a vertical shaft that drops through the ice all the way to the volcanic bedrock.
All necessary glacier equipment is provided, ensuring safety and comfort throughout the hike.
Enjoy a fully private experience with a dedicated guide and personalized commentary throughout.
Learn about the relationship between Iceland's glaciers and its active volcanic system directly beneath the ice.
On clear days, spot Eyjafjallajökull to the east, the glacier whose 2010 eruption disrupted European air travel.
What to Expect
Your guide meets you at the designated parking area at the base of the glacier approach. This is where equipment is distributed and safety briefings take place before setting off.
A brisk 30-minute walk brings you from the parking lot to the glacier's edge. Your guide will explain how the ice has receded over time and what that tells us about the glacier's dynamics.
Once on the glacier surface, crampons and any additional gear will be fully in use. Your guide leads you across the ice, pointing out formations and explaining how this landscape came to be.
You will have time to examine the distinctive blue ice formations up close and look into the depths of a glacier moulin. Your guide provides geological context for what you are seeing.
Weather permitting, your guide will orient you toward the surrounding volcanic landscape, including the neighboring Eyjafjallajökull glacier and the hidden Katla volcano beneath your feet.
The group retraces the route back across the ice and along the approach path to the parking lot, where equipment is returned and the tour concludes.
