Iceland Winter South Coast Tour with Ice Cave and Glacier Hike
Golden Circle, glacier hike, blue ice cave, diamond beach, and the south coast — all in three days.
This 3-day Iceland winter south coast tour combines the iconic Golden Circle with a certified glacier hike, a natural blue ice cave exploration, Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, and the famous diamond beach — a rare itinerary designed for Chinese-speaking travelers seeking a fully guided, small-group experience in Iceland.
Departing from Reykjavik each morning with a bilingual driver-guide, the tour covers Iceland's most celebrated natural landmarks across three distinct regions. Each day is paced to give travelers time to absorb the landscape without rushing from one stop to the next.
All glacier and ice cave activities are led by certified local guides who provide professional safety equipment on-site. The tour requires no prior outdoor experience, making it accessible to most travelers regardless of fitness level.
Accommodation is arranged in countryside hotels near the south coast, placing guests in areas where northern lights are visible on clear nights with favorable aurora forecasts.
Tour Highlights
Walk the rift valley at Thingvellir National Park, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet above sea level.
Watch Strokkur geyser erupt every five minutes up to 40 meters at the Geysir geothermal area.
Hike on a glacier with a certified guide, equipped with crampons, ice axe, helmet, and ropes provided by the tour.
Enter a natural blue ice cave beneath Vatnajokull glacier, accessible by modified super-jeep from October to April.
Photograph ice blocks scattered across the black sand of Diamond Beach beside Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon.
Stay in countryside hotels near the south coast for the best chance of viewing the northern lights on clear nights.
Visit Reynisfjara black sand beach and observe the dramatic basalt columns carved by the North Atlantic waves.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Hotel pickup begins at 8:00 AM from Reykjavik. The first stop is Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on the boundary of two tectonic plates and home to Iceland's largest natural lake. The group then visits the Geysir geothermal area, where the Strokkur geyser erupts regularly, before heading to Gullfoss waterfall, fed by the meltwater of the Langjokull glacier.
The second day begins with a stop at Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where a path leads behind the curtain of water when conditions allow. The group continues to Skogafoss waterfall before reaching either Solheimajokull or Skaftafell glacier for a certified guided glacier hike. Safety equipment including crampons, helmets, and ice axes is provided; hiking boots and waterproof clothing are required and available to rent.
Day three heads to Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, a 200-meter-deep glacial lake filled with floating ice calved from the Breidamerkurjokull outlet glacier. A modified super-jeep transfers the group to a natural blue ice cave for a guided underground visit. The tour continues to Diamond Beach and concludes at Reynisfjara black sand beach before returning to Reykjavik.
On both countryside nights, the driver-guide monitors official aurora forecasts and advises guests on optimal viewing conditions. Guests staying at the arranged rural hotels are well-positioned to observe the northern lights without light pollution on evenings with clear skies and a good forecast index.
