Ribeira Funda to Maia: North Coast Hiking Trail
Waterfalls, ancient mills, volcanic beaches, and sweeping coastal panoramas on a full-day guided walk along São Miguel's wild northern shore.
The Ribeira Funda to Maia coastal hike traces one of São Miguel Island's most rewarding northern routes, combining river valleys, ruined water mills, and dramatic Atlantic cliff views in a single full-day experience.
The trail begins deep in a forest of cryptomeria and exotic vegetation, where the sound of water from ancient levadas accompanies every step. Hikers move past crumbling mill ruins that once powered local communities, learning from their guide how this landscape shaped the lives of previous generations.
The route eventually opens onto the coast, revealing the dark volcanic sands of Praia da Viola beneath a cascading waterfall. Interpretive panels along the way bring local history and customs to life before the path concludes in the parish of Maia, where a picnic lunch and a visit to the Santa Iria viewpoint round out the day.

Itinerary
The hike starts at Ribeira Funda on the north coast. The trail enters a dense forest of cryptomeria and exotic vegetation, following the course of the river past ancient water mills and their stone levadas. Waterfalls punctuate the route as the path winds deeper into the valley.
Cross the river and follow the coastal section of the trail to Praia da Viola. A large waterfall marks the beach approach; the black volcanic sands offer a natural resting point. Interpretive panels nearby recount the history of the mills and the local communities that depended on them.
Continue along the cliff-top trail above the Atlantic, with open views across the northern coastline of São Miguel. The guide shares stories and local knowledge as the group progresses toward the village of Maia.
