Canyoning Lombadas or Ribeira da Praia — Half Day and Full Day Adventures
Rappel down towering waterfalls and discover the wild heart of São Miguel Island through its most dramatic natural canyons.
Canyoning in São Miguel takes you deep into the island's untamed interior, where lush valleys, hidden gorges, and cascading waterfalls form one of the Azores' most thrilling natural playgrounds. Two distinct experiences are available — a five-hour half-day route through the Vale das Lombadas and a nine-hour full-day descent along the Ribeira da Praia canyon near Lagos.
Both tours are led by accredited guides who provide all necessary technical equipment, including wetsuits, helmets, harnesses, and boots. These are advanced-level tours designed for participants who already have experience with rappelling, climbing, or exposure to significant heights.
The Azores archipelago is known for its volcanic landscapes and exceptional biodiversity, and the central plateau of São Miguel — roughly 45 minutes from Ponta Delgada — concentrates some of the island's most impressive geological features. Natural thermal pools, basalt rock formations, and near-vertical canyon walls define the terrain you will navigate on either route.
Tour Highlights
Rappel alongside and down a waterfall reaching approximately 45 metres in height on both the half-day and full-day routes.
Panoramic views of untouched Azorean valleys from exposed canyon ledges accessible only on foot through the river system.
Conclude the Lombadas half-day tour at a natural rock pool fed by thermal spring water — a rare geological reward at canyon's end.
Complimentary photos and video footage of the activity are included, captured by the guide team throughout the descent.
Full safety briefing, comprehensive insurance, and accredited professional guides are included in both tour options.
All technical canyoning equipment is provided, so participants need only arrive with a swimsuit and personal essentials.
The full-day experience begins with a scenic panoramic trail across Pico da Vela before descending into the canyon system.
What to Expect
Depending on the option selected, guides collect participants from their accommodation in or near Ponta Delgada. The drive to the central plateau takes approximately 45 minutes.
On arrival at the starting point, each participant receives a fully equipped harness, wetsuit, helmet, socks, and boots. A thorough safety briefing is conducted before the descent begins.
The half-day tour begins with a 10-minute walk to the entry point at Vale das Lombadas. The full-day tour starts with a panoramic trail across Pico da Vela before reaching the Ribeira da Praia canyon.
Multiple rappel sections of varying height guide participants down through the canyon alongside the river. Technical slides and jumps complement the descent at appropriate locations.
Both routes culminate in a rappel at or beside the tallest waterfall on the route. The full-day tour continues with additional rappels after the main drop, with valley views directly below.
The Lombadas route finishes at a natural thermal rock pool. Full-day participants receive a picnic lunch during the experience. Guides return the group to the original pickup point upon completion.
