Janela do Inferno and Caldeira Velha Hike
Ancient tunnels, enchanted forest trails, and thermal waters at the foot of a volcano
The Janela do Inferno and Caldeira Velha hike takes you through one of São Miguel's most dramatic and rewarding walking routes, weaving between historic aqueduct tunnels, lush pasturelands, and a final reward of natural thermal pools. This full-day adventure explores the southern slopes of the Água de Pau volcano in a small group of up to eight participants. Certified guides lead the way, sharing local knowledge of the island's geology, ecology, and rural heritage at every turn.
The trail begins near the Casa da Água and immediately immerses walkers in a landscape that feels far removed from the ordinary. Centuries-old tunnels, originally built to channel water for the island's population and industries, cut through dense forest and open onto sweeping views of the Lagoa and Ponta Delgada municipalities framed by the Atlantic Ocean.
Wildflowers, ferns, and the distinctive vegetation of the Macaronesian region line the path as it crosses wooden bridges and passes through quiet valleys fed by small streams. The walking pace is relaxed and accessible, making it suitable for children aged 8 and above and anyone with a moderate level of fitness.
The hike concludes at Caldeira Velha, a geothermal site where warm mineral-rich pools and a natural waterfall offer a genuinely restorative finish to the day. A picnic lunch is served along the route, giving the group time to pause, eat, and absorb the surroundings before reaching the thermal area.

The hike begins at the Casa da Água on the southern side of the island. The certified guide introduces the route, the local ecosystem, and the history of the water-capture infrastructure built across this landscape.
The path winds through four tunnels carved into the hillside, originally constructed as part of aqueducts. Between tunnels, open pastures reveal the island's famous grazing cattle against a backdrop of volcanic hillsides.
The group pauses for a picnic lunch provided by the operator. Shortly after, the trail reaches the natural waterfall created by water erosion, offering one of the most photographed spots along the route.
The day culminates at the Caldeira Velha geothermal park, where participants can enter the warm mineral pools or stand beneath the natural cascade. Time here is unhurried, allowing full enjoyment of the site.
