Canyoning Experience in São Miguel – Ribeira dos Caldeirões
Leap, slide and rappel through one of the Azores' most spectacular natural parks
This canyoning experience in São Miguel takes you deep into the heart of Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park, where lush Azorean canyon walls, cascading waterfalls and natural rock slides await. Suitable for participants from age 6, it balances genuine adventure with carefully managed safety for a wide range of abilities.
Credentialed guides lead you through a sequence of optional jumps, rappels and natural slides along a river that changes character with the seasons. Every obstacle has an alternative route, so no participant is ever left without a way forward.
The park itself sits roughly 45 minutes from Ponta Delgada in the northeastern corner of São Miguel, making it one of the island's most rewarding half-day escapes from the city. Photography and video are captured throughout, so the memories are taken care of while you focus on the experience.
Highlights

Open to participants from age 6, with flexible routes ensuring everyone can complete the course comfortably.
How the Day Unfolds
1
Equipment Distribution at the Park
On arrival at Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park, guides fit each participant with a wetsuit, harness, helmet and boots. This is also the moment to ask any questions before setting off.
2
First Briefing and Approach Walk
A short 15-minute walk leads to the first safety briefing point, where guides explain the techniques and signals used throughout the canyon. The surrounding landscape of mossy volcanic rock and tree ferns sets the tone for what follows.
3
Second Briefing and Rappel Demonstration
Continuing upward, the group pauses for a second briefing that includes a live rappel demonstration. A further 10-minute walk leads to the canyon entry point.
4
The Canyon Descent
The main adventure begins at the top of the first waterfall. Participants work through a series of jumps (all optional), a natural rock slide and multiple rappels as the canyon opens up below them.
5
Return to the Starting Point
Once the descent is complete, the group walks back to the equipment area. Guides collect gear and, where the transfer option has been booked, transport returns participants to their accommodation.

Ready to Take the Plunge?
Secure your place on one of São Miguel's most exhilarating half-day adventures. Spaces fill quickly, especially during the summer months.
No. Every jump throughout the route is entirely optional. Guides always provide an alternative path so that participants who prefer not to jump can continue without interruption.
What is the height of the highest jump? ▼
The largest jump reaches approximately 6 metres. Smaller jumps starting from 2 metres are also available along the route.
What is the height of the largest rappel? ▼
The longest rappel is approximately 14 metres. Availability of this particular section depends on the season and the size and profile of the group.
Can a non-participant accompany the group? ▼
Spectators cannot follow the group through the canyon, as completing the route requires entering the river. Non-participants can explore the Jardim da Ribeira dos Caldeirões and the small cafe within the park while waiting for the group to finish.
How does this differ from the Salto do Cabrito tour? ▼
The Canyoning Experience is a more flexible activity with less walking and includes rappels, jumps and natural slides. The Salto do Cabrito tour is more technical, features higher rappels and also includes a zip line; jumps on that tour are subject to weather conditions.
Is a transfer from Ponta Delgada available? ▼
Yes, a pick-up and drop-off service from Ponta Delgada is available as an optional add-on, subject to availability. For accommodation outside Ponta Delgada, contact the operator to confirm whether transfer is possible.

This canyoning tour takes place at Parque Natural da Ribeira dos Caldeirões, located in the northeastern area of São Miguel Island in the Azores, Portugal, approximately 45 minutes by road from Ponta Delgada. São Miguel is the largest island of the Azorean archipelago, a Portuguese autonomous region situated in the North Atlantic Ocean. The park is recognized for its exceptional volcanic landscape, old watermills, dense subtropical vegetation and a series of waterfalls that make it one of the most visited natural sites on the island. The Azores sit roughly 1,500 km west of mainland Portugal and are popular with European and international travelers seeking nature-based and adventure tourism experiences. Canyoning is one of the archipelago's signature outdoor activities, enabled by the volcanic terrain, year-round water flow and lush canyon environments unique to the islands.
