How the Day Unfolds
Guests are collected from their accommodation or nearby in the Ponta Delgada area and transported to the northeast of the island, approximately 45 minutes by road. The journey itself offers an introduction to the changing landscape of São Miguel.
On arrival at the natural park, guides distribute all canyoning equipment and conduct the first of two safety briefings during a short 15-minute hike into the canyon. A second briefing and a practical demonstration of rappelling technique follow before the activity begins.
The canyon section includes natural slides (toboggan), rappels ranging from 5 to 15 metres, and optional jumps from 2 to 7 metres. Every obstacle has an alternative route for those who prefer a gentler option, and guides adapt the itinerary to current conditions and group ability.
The group travels to Furnas village for a sit-down lunch of Cozido das Furnas at a local restaurant. This Portuguese stew of slow-cooked meats and vegetables is prepared in pots buried beside the volcanic calderas, a centuries-old local practice.
A short walk leads to the volcanic calderas of Furnas, where mineral springs and fumaroles can be observed at close range. Guests may then choose to visit Terra Nostra Park or Poça da Dona Beija for a thermal bath (entrance ticket not included in standard bookings).
Guests are returned to their original pick-up point in Ponta Delgada, concluding the day's itinerary. The exact timing of the return varies with group pace and seasonal schedule.
