Lagoa do Fogo Hike — São Miguel Island
A guided journey through volcanic forests to one of Portugal's most pristine crater lakes.
The Lagoa do Fogo hike takes you deep into the heart of São Miguel's youngest stratovolcano, following forest trails and freshwater streams to a protected natural reserve that few visitors reach on their own. This full-day experience combines genuine physical challenge with dramatic scenery and the comfort of an accredited local guide.
The trail begins at sea level in Água D'Alto on the island's southern coast, rising steadily through working pastures, cryptomeria pine stands, and conteira groves before opening onto sweeping panoramic views over Vila Franca do Campo and its celebrated offshore islet. Along the way, a historic water channel — still in use today — adds a quiet, reflective contrast to the volcanic landscape above.
At the summit ridge, the crater lake reveals itself in full: a wide expanse of crystal-clear water enclosed by endemic vegetation and volcanic cliffs. A picnic lunch on the lakeside allows time to absorb the surroundings before the descent, which follows a steeper path lined with hydrangeas and coastal views extending to the south shore. The afternoon concludes with an optional visit to a nearby coastal village, beach, or viewpoint, depending on group conditions and weather.

How the Day Unfolds
Your guide collects you from your accommodation or nearby. The drive to the trailhead in Água D'Alto takes approximately 25 minutes along the south coast of São Miguel.
The hike begins at sea level, climbing through open farmland and then into dense cryptomeria and conteira vegetation. The gradient increases gradually, with regular stops to take in the changing landscape.
Midway up, the trail crosses a functioning historic levada, its surface reflecting surrounding greenery. From the upper ridge, Vila Franca do Campo and its offshore islet come into view.
The trail reaches the rim of the crater and descends to the lake's edge. A picnic lunch is served here, giving the group time to rest and observe the protected endemic flora along the shoreline.
The return route follows a steeper path through hydrangea-lined terrain with views extending to the south coast. The guide adjusts pace to suit the group's energy and conditions.
Depending on weather and group preference, the afternoon may include a brief stop at Caloura, Vila Franca do Campo, or a nearby beach before the return drop-off in Ponta Delgada.
