HIKE Lomba de São Pedro – Moinhos Félix
A full-day trail adventure through waterfalls, ancient mills, and Europe's oldest working tea plantation on São Miguel's north coast.
This Lomba de São Pedro hiking trail invites you to discover a lesser-known corner of São Miguel Island where cascading waterfalls, cryptomeria forests, and centuries-old infrastructure converge along a single dramatic route. It is a guided experience designed for curious travellers who want more than a viewpoint snapshot.
The trail follows the natural contours of the island's north coast, tracing stream channels and stone pathways that have shaped rural life here for generations. Your guide will share local history and ecological context throughout the walk, making every stop feel purposeful rather than incidental.
The day extends beyond the trail itself. Before the hike begins, you visit the Gorreana Tea Plantation and Factory, currently the oldest tea operation in continuous production in Europe. After the trail, a stop at the Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park and the Santa Iria Viewpoint rounds out a genuinely full day on the island.

Itinerary
Your guide collects you from your accommodation in or near Ponta Delgada in the morning. Travel along the north coast toward the day's first destination.
Begin with a guided tour of Gorreana, the oldest tea plantation in continuous production in Europe. Learn about the cultivation and processing methods, and taste the finished product before heading to the trailhead.
The trail opens with a steep descent through hydrangeas toward the first waterfall, Cascata do Homem. Continue along the stream, passing the historic Moinho do Félix and reaching the Palma da Mão viewpoint where Cascata do Teófilo comes into view.
The route moves through a cryptomeria forest to reach Cascata da Gruta and its natural pool, Poço da Truta. The forest canopy and sound of running water make this one of the trail's most atmospheric sections.
A stairway ascent leads past natural springs and varied vegetation before the trail concludes through the local parish, passing traditional fountains. Lunch is a guided picnic enjoyed in nature.
The afternoon features a visit to Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park, home to a striking waterfall and native laurel forest. The day closes at the Santa Iria Viewpoint before the return journey to Ponta Delgada.
