🚴♀️ E-Bike Guided Ribeira Grande
🌍 Overview
The E-Bike Guided Ribeira Grande tour is a 4-hour guided electric bike experience along the north coast of São Miguel Island, exploring the charming city of Ribeira Grande, just 20 minutes from Ponta Delgada. Glide effortlessly on an e-bike through the historic center, volcanic landscapes, coastal viewpoints, and lush countryside, discovering why Ribeira Grande is known as the surf capital of São Miguel. With expert local guides, safety equipment, and the option of pick-up and drop-off from Ponta Delgada, this is a fun and eco-friendly way to see one of the island’s most authentic regions.
🚴 What to Expect
Your E-Bike Guided Ribeira Grande adventure begins on the north coast of São Miguel, at the parking area of Areal de Santa Bárbara Beach, next to the Tuká Tulá bar. After meeting your certified guide, you will receive a detailed safety briefing of about 15 minutes, learn how to use your electric bike and its functions, and be equipped with helmet, gloves, and reflective vest. Once everyone is comfortable, you set off on a memorable ride through Ribeira Grande and its surroundings.
You will cycle directly towards the “heart” of Ribeira Grande, passing through several parishes of this historic municipality. Along the way, your guide shares stories of local culture and traditions, and you will visit geosites such as the Fontanário da Ribeira Seca, formed by a volcanic eruption whose lava flows buried part of the Ribeira Seca parish. You will also admire the preserved architecture of landmarks like the Igreja do Espírito Santo, the Paços do Concelho building, and the iconic Ponte dos Oito Arcos.
The route continues into nature, following the sound of running water from multiple springs that lead to the Barragem da Fajã do Redondo. At the Caldeiras da Ribeira Grande, you explore an active volcanic area, observing hot springs used by local thermal baths and a special zone where traditional dishes such as cozido are slowly cooked using the natural heat of the ground.
On the way to the Miradouro da Coroa da Mata, you pedal along secondary paths surrounded by a rich variety of flowers and trees, enjoying panoramic views over the north coast. The tour then follows the dramatic volcanic coastline, stopping at the Miradouro de Santa Iria, the small port of Santa Iria, and the Ponta do Cintrão with its lighthouse. The final stretch takes you along a dirt track by the sea, where sweeping ocean views accompany you back into the streets of Ribeira Grande and to your starting point near Santa Bárbara Beach.
