Skaftafell Ice Climbing and Glacier Hike on Falljokull
Step onto living ice, conquer frozen walls, and explore one of Iceland's most dynamic glacial landscapes.
This four-hour expedition on Falljokull glacier combines guided glacier hiking with hands-on ice climbing, offering a rare opportunity to engage with one of the most impressive natural formations in Iceland. Led by experienced guides from Troll Expeditions, participants of all skill levels are welcome, including complete beginners.
Falljokull is an outlet glacier of the vast Vatnajokull ice cap, one of the largest glaciers in Europe. Walking across its surface reveals a constantly shifting world of deep blue crevasses, sculpted ice formations, and cylindrical moulins carved by meltwater over time. Your guide will explain the geological processes shaping these features throughout the walk.
Ice climbing is built into the itinerary, giving participants the chance to scale natural ice walls using crampons and ice axes under close instructor supervision. Technique is taught step by step, so no prior climbing experience is required. The focus is on building confidence incrementally while remaining safe on the ice.
The tour departs from the Troll Expeditions meeting point at HOF, from which participants are driven directly to the glacier base. All technical safety equipment is provided and fitted before the hike begins, ensuring the group is fully prepared before setting foot on the ice.

How the Tour Unfolds
Participants gather at the Troll Expeditions Skaftafell meeting point in HOF. From there, the group is driven to the base of Falljokull glacier.
Before stepping onto the ice, guides fit each participant with crampons, a helmet, and an ice axe. A full safety briefing and equipment demonstration follow.
The group sets out across the glacier surface, navigating ice formations and moulins. Guides explain how these features form and how the glacier changes over time.
At a suitable ice wall, participants receive step-by-step instruction in ice climbing technique. Each person has the opportunity to climb using their axes and crampons under direct guide supervision.
After the climb, the group descends safely off the glacier and returns by vehicle to the HOF meeting point, concluding the four-hour expedition.
