Coasteering at Caloura — Cliff Jumping, Sea Caves and Snorkeling on São Miguel Island
Where volcanic rock meets the Atlantic — a raw, exhilarating encounter with the coastline of the Azores.
Few experiences capture the wild spirit of the Azores quite like coasteering in Caloura, where participants navigate sea caves, leap from volcanic cliffs, and swim through crystalline Atlantic waters in one continuous, guided adventure.
Caloura sits on the central-south coast of São Miguel, about 20 minutes from Ponta Delgada. The area is known for its microclimate, lush surroundings, and a shoreline shaped entirely by ancient lava flows — making it one of the most visually striking and naturally diverse settings for a coastal adventure on the island.
The activity combines swimming, scrambling over irregular volcanic rock formations, and a series of cliff jumps ranging from one to eight meters — several of which are optional, so participants can choose their own level of challenge. A snorkeling segment is also built into the route, offering a glimpse of the marine biodiversity thriving beneath the surface.
Qualified guides lead the entire session, providing all necessary equipment and a full safety briefing before entering the water. The minimum age is eight years old, making this a viable option for families traveling with older children who are comfortable in the sea.

How the Activity Unfolds
The group meets at Caloura, where guides distribute all equipment — wetsuit, socks, boots, helmet, harness and buoyancy vest. A safety briefing covers entry techniques, jump posture and communication signals before anyone enters the water.
The session opens with a short traverse along the shoreline, scrambling across irregular lava formations. This section helps participants find their footing and get accustomed to the texture and unpredictability of the volcanic terrain.
Guides lead the group through a series of sea caves, natural rock pools and sheltered inner bays that punctuate the coastline. These enclosed spaces offer calmer water and some of the most striking geological formations of the route.
Multiple jump points are encountered throughout the route, ranging from 1 to 8 meters in height. Several are marked as optional, and guides assess conditions at each point before any participant jumps.
At a suitable point along the route, the group pauses for a snorkeling section. The waters around Caloura support a variety of Atlantic marine life, and guides point out species of interest during this segment.
The activity concludes back at the starting point, where participants change and retrieve any stored belongings. Those who selected the transfer option are returned to their accommodation in Ponta Delgada.
