Canyoning Salto do Cabrito – Rappel, Zipline & Natural Pools in the Azores
Descend volcanic gorges, rappel towering waterfalls, and plunge into crystal-clear natural pools on São Miguel Island.
Canyoning Salto do Cabrito is one of the most technically engaging outdoor experiences available on São Miguel Island, guiding participants through a dramatic volcanic canyon filled with multi-level rappels, natural water slides, and optional zipline passages amid dense Azorean forest.
Located near Ribeira Grande and the well-known Caldeira Velha area, the Salto do Cabrito canyon draws adventurers who want more than a scenic walk. The route follows a natural river channel carved through volcanic rock, where water has sculpted a series of cascades, pools, and narrow gorges over thousands of years.
Guided by certified canyoning professionals, participants navigate rappels ranging from 4 to 16 meters, with an optional 3-meter jump and a zipline section that adds variety to the descent. The terrain shifts with the seasons, meaning each visit offers a subtly different experience depending on water levels and conditions.
This activity is designed for those aged 14 and above who are comfortable with physical challenges and have a genuine appetite for immersive nature experiences. No prior canyoning experience is required, as guides provide thorough safety briefings and full equipment at the start.

What to Expect
The activity begins at the Salto do Cabrito Waterfall area near Ribeira Grande. Guides distribute all canyoning equipment and deliver a comprehensive safety briefing before departure.
A roughly 30-minute walk through lush Azorean vegetation leads the group to the canyon entry point. This short hike sets the scene and allows participants to acclimatize to the surroundings.
Upon reaching the starting point inside the canyon, guides conduct a second briefing with specific technical instructions for the rappels, zipline, and any optional jumps available that day.
The main descent takes the group through multiple waterfalls via rappel, ranging from 4 to 16 meters in height. The zipline section and an optional 3-meter jump provide additional variety throughout the route.
Between rappels, participants swim through natural pools formed by centuries of volcanic water erosion. The scenery combines dense forest, dark basalt rock, and cascading water at every turn.
After completing the descent, the group returns to the meeting point where participants can change into dry clothes. Those who selected the transfer option are dropped off at their accommodation in Ponta Delgada.
