Atlas Mountains, Ourika Valley and Berber Villages
Follow the river, walk the mountains, and discover a world apart from the city.
A day trip to Ourika Valley is one of the most rewarding excursions you can take from Marrakech, combining dramatic mountain scenery, authentic cultural encounters, and a refreshing walk to cascading waterfalls. The journey follows the Ourika River as it carves through the foothills of the High Atlas, revealing a landscape that feels entirely removed from the bustle of the medina. This is Morocco as it has existed for centuries, largely unchanged and genuinely captivating.
The Ourika Valley has long been home to Berber communities whose stone villages cling to the valley slopes much as they did in the 16th and 17th centuries. Visiting a traditional Berber house gives a rare insight into a way of life built around the rhythms of the mountains, the harvest, and close-knit family structures. These are not staged demonstrations but real homes where generations of the same family continue to live and work.
Beyond the villages, the valley narrows and the terrain becomes more rugged as you progress toward the end of the paved road. From there, a two-hour trek on foot leads through rocky terrain alongside rushing water before the valley opens to reveal the waterfalls that have made this route famous among travellers exploring southern Morocco. The return journey includes a sit-down lunch at a riverside restaurant with an uninterrupted view across the valley.
The tour is graded easy, making it accessible to most travellers without specialist hiking experience. The optional camel ride mid-route adds a traditional dimension to an already varied itinerary, and the relaxed pace throughout allows time for photography and quiet exploration.

Itinerary
Your guide collects you directly from your accommodation in Marrakech and departs for the High Atlas Mountains. The drive south offers early views of the plains giving way to rising terrain.
As the road follows the Ourika River upstream, the valley walls close in and the landscape shifts dramatically. Scheduled stops allow time for photography at the most photogenic viewpoints along the route.
You visit an authentic Berber village with architecture rooted in the 16th and 17th centuries. A guided tour of a traditional Berber home explains daily life, local customs, and the materials used in centuries-old construction.
At a mid-valley stop, travellers have the option to take a camel ride through the surrounding terrain. This is entirely optional and can be skipped without affecting the rest of the itinerary.
The vehicle continues to the end of the road before the group sets off on foot for approximately two hours to reach the valley's waterfalls. The trail follows the riverbank and climbs gradually through rocky terrain.
After the trek, lunch is served at a traditional restaurant with views across the Ourika Valley. The group then returns to Marrakech, arriving by early evening.
